More than 1,600 nippers and their families have flocked to Burleigh this weekend, so we decided to ask some locals how they spend their time in this nook of the Gold Coast.

1. Burleigh Head National Park

Burleigh Head National Park provides an escape from the city – right in the heart of the Gold Coast. The park boasts a rainforest retreat and rocky foreshore, perfectly nestled between the surf, sand and hinterland. A popular walking destination, locals report spotting whales in spring, or eagles dancing in the sky along the coast.

2. The Village Markets

The Burleigh market scene has a selection of trinkets and curiosities to tempt visitors of all interests and ages. The Village Markets runs on the first and third Sunday of every month – for those extending their visit to the Gold Coast!

3. David Flea Wildlife Park

Established in 1953, the David Fleay Wildlife Park is a heritage listed site, providing a haven for cassowaries, platypus, crocodiles, tree-kangaroos, and more. Families flock to the park to relax with a picnic and tune into nature’s chorus as the sound of birds drift from the surrounding forest.

4. BBQ Bazaar

A deserted warehouse on an industrial estate? Boring at best. Creepy at worst! But an empty warehouse converted into a bustling BBQ bomb-fire buffet? Now we’re talking. Pulling back its warehouse doors every Friday and Saturday night, the BBQ Bazaar tempts carnivores to roam its 18-plus food stalls in search of a magnificent meaty meal. With live musos jamming and a kids club for the little ones, it’s a night-out not to be missed.

5. Willow Dining Room

Family friendly, reasonably priced, and a stone’s throw away the beach, what more could you ask for? On the menu at Willow Dining Room, you’ll find a refreshing mix of Mediterranean and Australian cuisine as well as plenty of vegan options and eye-popping desserts. A relaxed atmosphere and welcoming staff make Willow Dining Room a true family favourite.
